The City of Galax will be sponsoring a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area
and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event
when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a
more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. CERT is a program of National Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA),
and Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM)
Class will be limited to the first 8 people to register and you can register online at Galax-Grayson EMS.com.
City of Galax residents will have first priority over non-city residents and you must be at least 18 years of age. Citizens of all ages are able to assist
their neighbors in the event of a major disaster.
Classes will be from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm beginning March 20, 22, 27, 29 followed with a mock drill on Saturday, March 31st. You must attend all required
hours in order to receive certification through Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
Please contact Sgt. Chris Brown at 276-238-2542 or cbrown@galaxva.com. Applications will be taken until March 12, 2012 and
you must be able to pass a background check.
